Veterans' Cup 2021 - Jens, we're thinking of you!

This year's Veterans' Cup was supposed to be something very special: After a year of the corona crisis and a hard and lonely winter, we finally wanted to get our bikes moving again and have a nice race. Unfortunately, the weekend got off to a very sad start.

On Friday afternoon, we received the news that a German BMX legend had passed away. Our friend Jens Klünder had been fighting a serious illness for a long time, but unfortunately lost his battle that day and closed his eyes forever. We will miss him and his positive attitude to life very much. As a farewell, we dedicated the following group photo, a minute's silence and a lap of honour around the track to him.

Jens (Klündrix): We will not forget you!

In memory of Jens, we will no longer be issuing start number 96 at the Veterans' Cup. As was announced a few days later, the BDR will also no longer issue the #96. A gesture of respect and a bow for the vice-worldchampion Jens.

The weather was crazy hot: at around 37 °C it was very exhausting to ride in plastic trousers and full-face helmets. But after Corona, everyone was happy to be able to ride on a track again. So everyone was happy to put up with the heat (who wants to ride in the rain and freezing cold).

After the lap of honour for our Klündrix, a total of 39 riders took to the start line: Chainless 15, Veterans 12 and Oldies 16 participants (with 4 double starters). Fortunately, there were no major crashes, with only a broken chain for Jens L.i.n.d.e.r and subsequent crash marring his first participation in the Veterans' Cup.

Race scenes

This year's prizes were once again trophies for the races and medals for the beauty show. In addition, Florian B.l.e.y.l.e.r from Munich had a brilliant idea: He donated metal plaques in gold, silver, bronze (for places 1, 2, 3) and black (for places 4-8). Many thanks for these great plaques and the generous donation Flo!

The extras were very well received by the veterans!

The races were exciting, but the winners were less surprising. In the Chainless class, Tibor S.i.m.a.i won again, just like last year, clearly ahead of Andreas B.a.y.r and Guido H.i.n.z. A special aspect of this final: 7 out of 8 riders came from Munich. As is so often the case, the Bavarians are very strongly represented at the Veterans' Cup.

In the oldies class, Oliver K.i.e.n.z.l.e finished in first place for the fourth time in a row, followed by Olaf K.l.e.i.n and Ralf M.a.u.r.i.t.z. Olaf was able to overtake Ralf on the home straight, who ran out of energy in the final metres.

In the veteran class, Nino N.a.g.e.l was able to leave his mate Thomas E.n.c.k behind and take the win, with Oliver K.n.o.l.l completing the podium in third place. Thomas and Nino also took part in the bunny hop contest later on and cut a fine figure there.

The bunny hop contest was dominated by Guido K.a.p.p.e.n. He set a new fable record of 90 cm. This made him 5 cm taller than last year's winner Florian B.l.e.y.l.e.r (85 cm) and 15 cm taller than third-placed Guido H.i.n.z (75 cm).

The judging of the beauty show becomes more challenging every year. The bikes get better from cup to cup, the selection more complicated. This makes it increasingly difficult for the head of the jury, Rainer Schadowski, to judge the large number of beautiful bikes.

The categories and award winners this year were as follows: Best of Bike Show (THE perfect bike incl. presentation): 1st Mark S.c.h.o.e.l.z.l (Hutch Judge) 2nd Robert I.w.a.n.o.w.s.k.i (JMC) 3rd Olaf K.e.s.e (PTR).

Who else was there? Thomas F.a.l.t.e.r from Frankfurt came along with Holger S.p.i.n.d.l.e.r on his racing bike. Patrick V.o.e.l.k.l was also at the track with a cool "OriGINal" VW Bulli. The K.a.p.p.e.n brothers Holger and Guido had travelled to the event in their new Tesla, but were unfortunately not active at the start. Instead, Guido dominated the bunny hop contest and secured one of the coveted prizes. TSV Braunshardt veterans such as the F.i.s.c.h.e.r family with Hans and Markus F.i.s.c.h.e.r were at the track, as were the H.o.e.p.p.i.n.g family with Kathrin, Andreas and Christiane H.o.e.p.p.i.n.g. The brothers Udo and Jürgen W.a.g.n.e.r were there, as were Arkad M.a.n.d.r.i.c.z and Stephan B.o.u.r.e.n from Darmstadt, Abbas H.a.m.d.i from Frankfurt, Elmar H.e.n.r.i.c.h with his yellow Porsche, Marcus S.t.o.e.c.k.e.l on his freshly restored Redline PL 20 and so on.

I would like to thank my club TSV Braunshardt for organising the Veterans' Cup under the difficult conditions of the Corona restrictions. Special thanks go to Oliver R.a.p.p and Lutz M.o.h.r.h.a.r.d.t for their support in the run-up to and on the day of the Veterans Cup! Thanks also to Lutz for his active support with the design of the Veterans' Cup logo for 2021 and to all the volunteers for the catering, support in complying with the hygiene requirements, as starters, pre-starters, judges, registration, T-shirt sales, etc.

Finally, a few impressions of the Veterans' Cup, a dinner in a large group, with Oli in front of "his pub", a veteran with BMX wisdom, Patrick with glasses marking after "permanent tanning" during the day.

See you next year!

Ralf M.a.u.r.i.t.z.

P.S.: Most of the photos in this report were taken by Ralf M.a.u.r.i.t.z.
